I started making chairs with the use of traditional hand tools and techniques in 1996. Using axes and equipment such as the shaving horse and drawknife to cleave, shape and rough out the chair components All turning was carried out with the use of a pole-lathe. The components all being sourced from native hardwoods such as Ash, Oak, Cherry and Elm, harvested from sustainable, managed woodlands. Selecting the trees that I wished to use, choosing only the prime material for the work in hand cutting from the green unseasoned wood.

By cleaving, the stock material with the axe I obtain the strongest components for my chairs utilizing the whole strength of the grain. I work with the wood, not against it. Once the components are cut out they are then left to season in warm dry storage. The VarensaAs they are relatively small sections they season thoroughly and reasonably quickly, usually within 2-3 months. When seasoned the components are assembled into the new chair form. Once completed the chair is given a natural oil finish.

The chairs I make are unique and a delight for the eye to behold as will as being exceptionally comfortable. I have often tailor made chairs to meet individual specific requirements adjusting critical dimensions such as height and depth of seat, length and lean of backrest. The New form throne chair
