Zurisee Bench is a seating project developed to hang rather than rely on a typical leg arrangement
to support the structure. The client’s wishes were for a seat to be placed against the boathouse
wall, a lovely morning sun spot, especially in early spring & Autumn whereby the wall acts as a
gentle passive solar storage heater.
The Zurisee Bench represents a prime example of site-specific design constraints of the situation.
The prime reason for creating a hanging scheme is the lack of solid ground at the base location.
This however becomes a design feature where by a solution is found to suspend the stainless steel
bench sub frame from 6mm diameter stainless steel cables. The scheme uses a contoured oak
slatted deck seat & backrest, which is independently mounted to the wall. Fixing to the concrete
boathouse wall was achieved with the use of anchor bolts. Providing good, solid contact location
points for the mounting stainless steel hardware supplied by Jakob AG.
This design provides comfortable seating for 3 people with generous width armrests & ample
space for glasses, cups & coffee pots.
